MILK, Balham

Living i Balham, you quickly get to know that Milk is the place to go at the weekend. It always has a queue out the door with people waiting to tuck into some avocado and poached eggs at the area's local hotspot. A few weekends ago, I was that person. Slightly put off by the queue but not enough to actually get out of it, I waited not-so-patiently to be given a table. Once inside, you begin to understand why it's so loved. The interior is dated but modern at the same time and the atmosphere is buzzing.

The menu is made up of standard and creative brunch items, from a full English to sweetcorn fritters. I went with the boring but oh-so-good option of poached eggs on sourdough with a side of avocado. When it arrived, I was a little disappointed at the size (below) as it was only served with one piece of toast and to be honest, I could definitely have eaten more. The eggs were perfectly cooked and almost popped when I cut into them and the avocado was wonderfully seasoned with what I assume to be lemon juice among other things.

Size aside, it was delicious. The toast was maybe a little too crunchy but I'm not complaining. For drinks we ordered freshly made juices, mine a perfect mix of strawberry, banana and mango. The prices weren't bad either, we spent around £13 each which seems to be the standard for a London brunch.

Milk, you get the thumbs-up from me. If you're ever in the area, it would be rude not to - just don't let the queue put you off (I promise it moves quickly).
