Mommi, Clapham North

Mommi in Clapham North is definitely a hidden gem. If it was based in central London, it would be one of those places that you queue for hours to get in. Luckily for us, it isn't and booking a table was easy. It's modern, a bit quirky and is absolutely huge inside. The service was quick and the staff attentive - what more could you ask for?

The menu was the selling point as I'd never heard of Mommi until a friend recommended it. Although you can order one course from the menu should you wish, the most popular option is to order from the set menus. The set menus range from around £20-25 per person and feature three fish, two meat and one vegetable dish, that come out in three courses.

We chose set menu 2, or Fuji as it's called, and first up we were served tuna tataki and a sushi rice. The tuna was delicate and perfectly complimented truffle oil, tomatoes and hazelnuts, and was absolutely delicious. Quite possibly my favourite dish of the menu. The rice had a lovely flavour and was the carb side needed to fill us up.

Next up we had yakitori salmon and lamb cutlets. The salmon fell off the stick it was so tender and again, perfectly complimented with seasoning and a lime butter sauce. The lamb cutlets I found a little fatty (maybe I chose the wrong one) and not as tasty as I'd expected.

Finally, we had tempura fish and chips, short rib of beef and some truffle dusted sweet potato fries. The fish and chips were delicious, although a little too deep-fried. Had this been the first course, I would probably have enjoyed it a lot more but as I was bordering on full by this point, I struggled to eat more than one piece. It was really tasty though and I still regret not eating more of it. The beef, for me, was probably my least favourite dish. I didn't enjoy the quinoa and peppers that it was served with, it felt a bit disjointed and the beef just wasn't to my taste. The truffle chips were, of course, wonderful and we ate every single one. These were additional to the set menu but I definitely recommend them.

Overall, Mommi gets a massive thumbs-up and I cannot wait to go back. I want to try each of the set menus as there's still so much they have to offer. If you fancy something different, a champagne meal for a lemonade price, head to Clapham North and give them a try.
