Belgo Centraal, Multiple Locations

From the outside, it's grotty and easily missed. On the inside, it's modern, edgy and dungeon-esque. I was recommended Belgo Centraal by a friend and as a mussel-lover, it sounded great. To top it off, we found a deal for 3 courses and a drink for £19.50 (bargain!).

For starters, we ordered cheesy croquettes and pate. The croquettes were perfectly crispy, served with sliced mango chutney. The tastes and textures complimented each other well, I would certainly recommend them. The pate was equally as tasty, although you get a lot of pate for the small amount of bread. Served with the same mango chutney, the flavours were perfectly complimentary of each other.

Known for their mussels, we had to order some! Deciding on the traditional dish with a garlic and white wine sauce, they came in a giant pot and a slice of lemon. As we were limited to a set menu, the only other thing that grabbed our attention was the cheeseburger.

Both were completely flavourless. The mussels could easily have been plain, you couldn't taste the sauce at all even after adding the lemon juice. The burger didn't have a lot going for it either, it was really plain and compared to some of the burgers around London, it definitely didn't stand out. I'm not sure if this is always the case or maybe we were treated a bit differently because we were getting a good discount but the food just wasn't what I had hoped for. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere is pretty cool, but it's a thumbs-down from me.
